MockChats vs iFakeTextMessage

MockChats vs iFakeTextMessage: screenshot tool or chat video maker?

iFakeTextMessage is a quick, free way to mock up a single fake iMessage screenshot in the browser — no account, type and download. But it's showing its age: the iMessage it draws belongs to an older iOS era, not an accurate reproduction of the app as it looks today. MockChats is a different class of tool: it rebuilds WhatsApp, iMessage, Hinge and Bumble in current detail and exports animated vertical videos as well as stills, with typing dots, read receipts and reactions playing out message by message.

The short version: for a one-off static image where accuracy doesn't matter, iFakeTextMessage will do. For chat videos, multiple platforms, or an iMessage that actually looks like today's iOS, MockChats is the upgrade.

Where iFakeTextMessage is strong

It's fast and free. There's no account, no editor to learn and nothing to install — you type a conversation, tweak the status bar (carrier, battery, clock) and download an image. For a quick meme or a single prop screenshot, that low floor is the whole appeal, and it's been a go-to for exactly that for years.

Where MockChats pulls ahead

The obvious gap is video. iFakeTextMessage outputs a static image, full stop. MockChats exports the conversation as an animated vertical video — bubbles landing one by one, typing dots pausing before the reveal, the Delivered receipt flipping to Read — which is the format that actually travels on TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

The second gap is accuracy, and it's a bigger one than it sounds. iFakeTextMessage's iMessage is not a faithful reproduction of the app as it exists today — its chrome is stuck in an older iOS era, with a carrier-text status bar and battery-percent toggles that modern iPhones no longer show, and the rendering as a whole reads as dated next to a real screenshot. Anyone who uses an iPhone daily can clock it. MockChats' iMessage rebuild matches the current app: always-blue bubbles, speech-bubble reactions, the Delivered/Read receipt under the last message, and Apple emoji rendered as images so the chat looks identical on every viewer's device. There's deliberately no status bar to date the mock at all.

And it's one platform versus four: MockChats does WhatsApp, iMessage, Hinge and Bumble from the same editor, with saved chats you can re-edit and re-export any time.

The honest verdict

Which should you pick?

Choose iFakeTextMessage if…

  • You need one quick static iMessage screenshot, right now, for free.
  • You don't need the screenshot to be an accurate match for today's iMessage.
  • You don't want to create an account for a one-off.

Choose MockChats if…

  • You want the conversation as an animated video, not a still.
  • The iMessage look needs to match today's iOS, not an older one.
  • You also want WhatsApp, Hinge or Bumble chats.
  • You post regularly and want saved, re-editable chats.
Pricing

What each one costs

iFakeTextMessage is free to use in the browser (as checked August 2026) — a fair price if you don't need accuracy: what you're downloading is a dated approximation of iMessage, not the app as it looks today.

MockChats is also free to start: 3 watermarked videos or 9 images a month, no card. Paid plans (from $12/mo, or $9/mo billed annually) remove the watermark and add monthly export credits, iMessage on Starter and the dating apps on Pro. The difference you're paying for is animated video and a current, multi-platform rebuild — if you never need those, the free incumbent is fine.

Fiction, not fake proof

Whichever tool you pick: fake chats are for storytelling, parody, skits and mockups. Don't impersonate real people or pass a scripted chat off as a genuine message, endorsement or evidence — that's against our terms, and it's the line that keeps the format on the right side of the rules.
