MockChats vs TextingStory

MockChats vs TextingStory: which makes the better fake text video?

TextingStory is the app that popularised chat-story videos — a fun iPhone and Android app where the video is a sped-up recording of you typing, in TextingStory's own chat themes. MockChats takes the opposite approach: you script the conversation in the browser, style it as a pixel-accurate WhatsApp, iMessage, Hinge or Bumble chat, and the animated vertical video is rendered for you — typing dots, read receipts and all.

The short version: choose TextingStory for casual, phone-first storytelling in a generic chat look; choose MockChats when the chat needs to look like the real app and you want to write and edit on a desktop.

Where TextingStory is strong

TextingStory more or less invented the format, and it shows: tens of millions of downloads, a friendly editor where you swipe between senders as you type, automatic speed-up so the pacing stays snappy, typing sounds, chapter cards and reaction-video inserts. It's genuinely fun to use, and its one-off in-app purchases are cheap — watermark removal is a single $6.99 purchase rather than a subscription.

If you're telling stories from your phone for the fun of it, it's a lovely app.

Where MockChats pulls ahead

TextingStory deliberately doesn't look like any real messaging app — its themes (Modern, Realistic, GreenApp) are lookalike-adjacent, not reproductions. MockChats rebuilds the actual interfaces people use every day: WhatsApp's bubbles, ticks and wallpaper, iMessage's blue bubbles and Delivered/Read receipt, Hinge's liked-photo opener, Bumble's matched banner. When a viewer has seen the real app thousands of times, that accuracy is what makes them stop scrolling.

The workflow is different too. TextingStory's video is a recording of your typing session, made on a phone. MockChats is a web app: script the chat with a keyboard, tweak any message, and export — the animation is rendered for you, identically every time. Spot a typo after exporting? Edit the message and re-export in a minute.

And TextingStory is video-only in its own style, while MockChats also exports still images of the whole thread for carousels and thumbnails.

The honest verdict

Which should you pick?

Choose TextingStory if…

  • You want to make chat stories on your phone, start to finish.
  • You like the typing-session recording style, sounds included.
  • You'd rather pay small one-off purchases than a subscription.
  • The chat doesn't need to look like a specific real app.

Choose MockChats if…

  • The chat has to read as real WhatsApp, iMessage, Hinge or Bumble.
  • You script and edit at a desk, with a keyboard.
  • You want stills as well as video, from the same chat.
  • You post on a schedule and want saved chats you can re-edit and re-export.
Pricing

What each one costs

TextingStory is a free app with one-off in-app purchases: $0.99 each for photos/GIFs and sounds, $2.99 for Storyteller, $6.99 to remove the textingstory.com watermark from videos, $29.99 for a Pro licence and $59.99 for a commercial-use licence (as checked August 2026). If all you want is occasional watermark-free videos in TextingStory's own style, that one-off $6.99 is genuinely cheaper than any subscription — worth saying plainly.

MockChats is free to start — 3 watermarked videos or 9 images a month, no card — and paid plans start at $12/mo, or $9/mo billed annually (Starter), which removes the watermark, adds iMessage and includes 7 videos a month. Pro at $29/mo adds Hinge and Bumble and 30 videos a month. You're paying for real-app accuracy, a desktop workflow and a monthly export allowance rather than a one-time unlock.

Fiction, not fake proof

Whichever tool you pick: fake chats are for storytelling, parody, skits and mockups. Don't impersonate real people or pass a scripted chat off as a genuine message, endorsement or evidence — that's against our terms, and it's the line that keeps the format on the right side of the rules.
